Spring/Summer nail shades

Hi ladies! Whilst a majority of you may be slowly transitioning into the cooler months, Australia is currently experiencing temperamental days - we're cold one day and hot the next! All this being the norm for Spring :P I don't know about other ladies, but I'm really into the brighter colours recently and here are a few of them today.

First up, I have a shade I wouldn't normally go for - yellow! OPI Need sunglasses is a bright yellow shade which totally clashes with my skin tone. I love it to bits though, so I'll definitely find another way of flaunting the colour on my tips. This is three coats.

Next up is a neutral colour. Despite wanting to see more colour, I'm also becoming a huge fan of neutral nail polishes and am loving OPI My vampire is buff. It's a clean and off-white shade which looks really good next to my yellow-based skin tone. Pictured is two coats.

Of course, I can never pass up on a purple and OPI A grape fit is a nice shade to satisfy my purple obsession ;) I really have nothing to complain about it - it was opaque in two easy coats.

OPI Can't find my Czechbook is a gorgeous sky blue. It's just bright enough to scream summer, but not too bright to be totally in your face. Love this shade of blue and I'm seeing many future uses with it! I applied two coats for my photos below.

I know many ladies are currently slowly adjusting to the cooler months ahead, but what shades are you missing or hanging onto still? For the Southern Hemisphere girls, what nail polish do you think you'll be getting a lot of use out of?

Thanks for reading!

  1. It seems so odd to me that we are entering fall/winter and you have just finished. It would be weird to have Christmas in the summer. All those traditional holiday songs we usually sing about sleigh bells in the snow and White Christmas's wouldn't make any sense. Of course, where I live the weather is considered tropical and we rarely get freezing temps here. But ya know. I like A Grape Fit, that is very pretty on you. I have Need Sunglasses and it's one of my favorites even if it doesn't fit my skintone well. I wear what I like and what makes me happy.

  2. Hi Delphi. Need Sunglasses was patchy on the first coat, slightly better with the second coat and evened out by the third coat. It definitely needs three coats, but it's the norm with most yellow nail polishes. Hope that helps! :)

  3. I think it's the same for us Southern Hemisphere girls to hear of white winters ;) Thanks for the lovely compliment and I totally agree with wearing shades whenever you feel like them, not according to seasons. Sometimes though, they definitely impact on my decisions when it comes time for me to sit down and paint my nails. Just sometimes... ;)

  4. It does help. I started reading nail blogs a bit over a year ago and the polish bug but me. Since then I've purchased about 150 polishes (I know, not very many compared to most polish addicts), starting with the very inexpensive Sinful Colors (SC), moving next into Sally Hansen (SH), then Essie (because it's also in drugstores and I hadn't yet ventured into beauty stores). I also started the "mandatory" lemming list.

When I did start going to beauty stores, it was only to find pure acetone which I had read about on blogs. Ulta intimidated me (still does) and there was a Sally Beauty Supply (SBS) relatively close to where I live so I ventured into SBS. I found the pure acetone and then came to a complete stop in front of their polish section. I'm sure you're aware SBS carries China Glaze (CG) but not OPI. So CG started making headway into my stash along with a few other brands sold at SBS. I found another beauty shop near my dentist so I go there to buy OPI.

In all that time, I had purchased around five yellows (all SC and SH) but rarely reached for them because, like so many others, I don't think they look good on me. The yellows I had bought were intended to be used in nail art but haven't been yet. I have used only one of my yellow polishes for just one mani. That mani was so long ago, I honestly don't remember how the application/formula was.

However all the bad yellow polish reviews on nail blogs caused me to not buy another yellow, nor even put one on my lemming list. After reading the less-than-stellar review, I'd study the yellow again in the post and always find a reason to not add it to my lemming list (too pale, too shimmery, too whatever).

Then I saw your post on OPI's Need Sunglasses. I studied and studied that yellow polish on your gorgeous nails and thought, "Noooo! I can't find anything about it that would cause me to not buy it." It's opaque, bright but not neon, creamy and, dang it, reminds me of lemon curd. I love lemon curd!

I reluctantly left my comment on your post asking how the formula was. Your response of, "patchy on the first coat, slightly better with the second coat and evened out by the third coat," was better than I expected for a yellow. I have other polishes that apply the same way you describe so I know I can handle it.

I loved that you said it "evened out" because it's so annoying when a polish doesn't self-level. And your original post said you used three coats. That's very different from other yellow polish reviews that nearly uniformly say the yellow required four to five coats and there's still VNL.

This was a long-winded thank you but I wanted you to know why I so appreciated your reply. My lemming list now has a yellow on it: OPI's Need Sunglasses! Thank you! And thank you some more! Delphi
